Tour Description

This hike will start at 8:00am at the entrance to Holiday Beach Conservation Area. We will start the day by walking the forested trails of the park in search of migratory songbirds. Here we have the opportunity to closely observe warblers such as Blackburnian, Nashville, Bay-breasted and Blackpoll, as well as a variety of thrushes and flycatchers. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds often stop by to refuel on the plentiful Jewel Weed flowers, giving excellent views. As the day goes on, we will head to the hawkwatch tower and switch our focus to the sky. Overhead migration is often quite the spectacle at this spot, we've had days with thousands of Broad-winged Hawks and tens of thousands of Blue Jays streaming overhead. At this point we we can break for lunch and you may choose to eat on the tower, or at the picnic tables just below. In the afternoon we will have the option to continue hawkwatching at the tower, or go to our next activity of birding along the marsh and forest edge in search of wetland birds. Songbird migrants will often travel along the edge of a marsh in search of insects, and the plentiful hunting hides along the path may allow for some intimate views of cryptic marshland species such as Common Gallinule, and Virginia Rail. Throughout the day we will be offering identification pointers, discussing the magnificent feat of migration, and trying to ensure you get excellent views of the birds Holiday Beach has to offer. This hike is accessible for those with physical challenges; the trails are well maintained and flat. We will spend the day birding at a slow and relaxed pace, taking frequent stops along the way. Bathrooms are spaced throughout the park and easily accessible. *Notes* -an entry fee of $12/car is required to enter the park. -bring your own lunch, snacks, and water (keep hydrated!) -bring rubber boots (the marsh trails can be wet), sunscreen, and a hat. -a scope will be provided but feel free to bring your own!
