Algonquin Provincial Park

Tour Description

This trip will begin at the Algonquin Provincial Park visitor centre at 8:00 am. We will start our day by checking the feeders at the VC, a great spot for finches such as Common Redpoll, Pine Grosbeak and Evening Grosbeak. The morning will be spent exploring hotspots along the Highway 60 Corridor, including Spruce Bog and The Old logging Museum area. Boreal specialties like Black-backed Woodpecker, Spruce Grouse and Canada Jay are always a possibility in these areas, however as is the case with most birds, there's never a guarantee. Algonquin is always an interesting spot to explore, so even if we don't see a few of our targets it will still be a fun trip. Mammals including Moose, North American River Otter, Pine Martin and Eastern Wolf are on the list of possibilities, so we will be on the lookout all day. For lunch we will return to the Visitor Centre and have an opportunity to warm up inside and look for finches at the feeders again. In the afternoon we will work our way west along Hwy 60, and check some new locations including Mew Lake and The Old Airfield. During the day we will be offering identification pointers and trying to ensure everyone gets good views and photos of the species we encounter. This hike will involve several kilometers of walking on hardpacked snow and paved roads. There may be patches of ice, so bring ice cleats for your shoes if you have them. We will spend the day birding at a slow and relaxed pace, taking frequent stops along the way. Bathroom breaks are spaced throughout the day, with a planned stop every 2-3 hours. An optional evening of owling will also be optional around Huntsville on March 14th, for those interested. *Notes* -There are no gas stations in the park, so make sure to fill up before arriving. -bring your own lunch, snacks, and water (stay hydrated!) -bring sunscreen, a hat and warm enough clothes to be comfortable outside in the cold...Early spring in Algonquin can be quite unpredictable. -a scope will be provided but feel free to bring your own. -Advice on accommodations and places to eat will be provided after registering.
